West Africa, Nigeria, Mumuye Peoples carved wooden horizontal helmet style mask with ribbed carving to the skull painted in bands of blue and white. Masks of this type were known to be grandmothers or old women with their orb like round eyes, grooved hairstyle carved in relief, and open beak like mouth. Used during the Vabong initiation ceremony, the Vabong masks of both male and female spirits were brought out for initiates to perform. Size 16" H x 8 1/2" W
Condition: Wear commensurate with age and use.
