Western Africa, Mali, Dogon Peoples 20th c. Simian or Dege Black monkey spirit mask carved in wood with a heavy orange pigment and darkened surface. The Dogon use these masks in funerary rituals called dama. The rituals allow the souls of the deceased to leave the village and enter the world of the dead, marking the end of the mourning period. 13 1/2" H x 8" W
