Fine Arms, Armour, Ethnographic & Asian
Lot 58:
Eastern Europe, Caucasian, Georgia, late 18th century to early 19th century gold and silver kinjal Qama dagger with bone grip, likely an earlier example that also includes a shagreen leather sheath. I-Shaped grip in walrus bone and bands of iron spacers, decorated gold Zarnish inlaid hardware. Blade straight double-edged and original probably dates the dagger to the late 18th or early 19th century with traditional off center deep grooved fuller to either side. Sheath in shagreen leather with nielloed decoration to rear and gold inlaid decoration to face in intricate ribbons and scrolling patterns.
The most lavishly decorated Qama are believed to be made in Tbilisi an important trade epicenter for the sword makers of the period where master Georgian and Degastani weaponsmith converged. It was a point of pride and stature to have a fine Qama worn by men at the waist slightly bent.
Size 22 1/2" L, blade 15" L
