Buyer's premium:

Tall Philippines Bulul statue clasping bowl from the Cordillera region of Luzon and dating from at least the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Fine bowls used in rituals hold a special place as some of the most exquisite and finely crafted artifacts within the Cordillera region. Each distinct culture within the Cordilleras has developed its own unique bowl forms. For instance among the Ifugao people, there is a notched ‘Star’ shaped bowl known as " Duyo " which is typically employed during rituals. The featured artifact is a single anthropomorphic seated figure called "Bulul", with its arms and legs gracefully embracing the bowl form. These Bulul figures were crated with great skill and artistry during the early to mid-20th century. The carvers of that time ingeniously incorporated anthropomorphic elements into everyday objects, transforming them into both integral and functional pieces of art. This blending of aesthetics and functionality vividly showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera region. Size 20 1/5" H x 10" W x 11 1/2" L (weight is approximately 15lbs)
