Philippines Archipelago, Northern Philippines, Highland Tribes 19th century or just after rectangular shield with short pointed ends and light color rattan wrapping to either side. The face carved with a relief lizard, shield in a light wood long and slender. The top with two pointed carved ends and center protrusion with a pierced hold probably for suspension, the lower end with a mimicked design unpierced. Rattan wrapping original to the shield with an encrusted finish that is scratched from handling, use, and wear in battle. Size 41 1/2" H x 11 1/4" W.

Philippine war shields are often found in a round form common to the Moro or southern regions. Rectangular examples often with long pointed ends are found in the Northern mountainous highland regions. The composition typically wood, metal and woven material varies to the individual sub regions of each.
