Philippines Archipelago, Northern Philippines, Highland Tribes 19th century or just after. Thin rectangular shield carved in a light wood with a convex face that protrudes at the center. The boarder decorated in a zig zag pattern with rattan wrapping to the bottom through pierced holes and absent to the piercings at the top. The reverse with a deep carved recession for the handle for use. Size 40 1/2" H x 10 1/2" W
Philippine war shields are often found in a round form common to the Moro or southern regions. Rectangular examples often with long pointed ends are found in the Northern mountainous highland regions. The composition typically wood, metal and woven material varies to the individual sub regions of each.
