Quadrangular form of wavy steel designed to deflect blows and catch opposing swords with the central hook, the face with light embossed false rivets to the boarder which appears to have originally been coated with leather or velvet. The reverse with a steel riveted handle connected at three points for use in either hand. Size 11 1/2" H x 10 1/4" W

Medieval Fencing masters trained students with small hand held bucklers or Targe shield since at least the 16th century. This compact, light, and thus maneuverable tool was particularly well suited to capture and deflect an opponents thrusts or cut.
