Fine Arms, Armour, Ethnographic & Asian
Lot 116:
Middle East, Omani Maritime Empire, Circa 1600s barrel and iron mounts, stock probably later as the barrels were often reused due to their exceptional construction. Early fluted barrel being of fine construction and unique in form to the Omani Abu Fitila, constructed of steel multi-rounded and carved fluting with raised gilded sight to the flared muzzle tip, widening towards the breach and camber with a carved iron band inlaid in gold and silver and chiseled raised sight, hall mark partially pierced just behind band, remaining hardware probably original to barrel or period.
Similar in construction and shape to the Indian Sind Region Toreador this long gun was actually an early Omani maritime Empire weapon used by the Naval power while in competition with the Portuguese and Britain for influence in the Persian Gulf. See Book, Firearms of the Islamic World by Robert Elgood for reference and several examples which list the barrel type as Architectural form. 66 1/4" L, barrel 48"L, 5/8" bore
