West Africa, Mali, Dogon peoples white monkey mask for the trade with a bleach white painted patina and black paint to the eyes of the monkey figure. Size 16" H x 4 3/4" W, stand not included
The Dogon use these masks in funerary rituals called Dama. The rituals allow the souls of the deceased to leave the village and enter the world of the dead, marking the end of the mourning period.
Collected prior to 2008, ex-Lacy Gallery (Vanna & Lee Lacy collection), Los Angeles CA. Lacy Gallery was founded upon six decades of collecting ethnographic and fine art. Lee Lacy was a distinguished Hollywood producer of iconic TV series and commercials.
