Early 20th century basket weave fiber mask of an ancestral spirit. Exceptionally woven in multiple dimensional detail with a wide shoulder and neck opening. Protruding eyes and lips, with a bird headdress. Painted in brown, black, white and orange pigment highlighting different sections. Such masks were worn during various ceremonies including initiations, weddings and funerals. Size of mask 17" H x 16" L x 14" W, museum quality stand included
Collected prior to 2008, ex-Lacy Gallery (Vanna & Lee Lacy collection), Los Angeles CA. Lacy Gallery was founded upon six decades of collecting ethnographic and fine art. Lee Lacy was a distinguished Hollywood producer of iconic TV series and commercials.
Condition: As-is condition with bird head missing on headdress, minor losses expected with wear and commensurate with age.
